The story of Free and Brave began on July 4, 2025, at the annual Clark Fork Independence Day Parade. Orrin Thompson (a Clark Fork native and recent Army retiree) captured the spirit of the day through his photography documenting the small-town pride that makes this celebration so special.

Months later, his spouse, Dayna Thompson, was challenged in her upper-level painting course at Augusta University to create a composition that embodied “Beauty and Awe.” A retired Army veteran herself, Dayna immediately recalled one of Orrin’s photographs: a strong young girl, boldly riding horseback while waving the American flag. Under the mentorship of Professor Namwon Choi, that image evolved into the painting Free and Brave. Orrin then completed the work with a custom frame, bringing the piece full circle.
